En 1969, Fredrik Barth dirigea et publia le classique recueil de textes Ethnic Groups and Boundaries qui influença, en plus de ses propres écrits fort connus, une génération d'anthropologues dans leur façon de penser les groupes ethniques et leurs cultures en contact. Le présent article trace l'évolution des concepts de Barth qui ont été appliqués à plusieurs situations et cas durant les années 1990. L'auteur explore les influences qu'il a lui-même reçues en appliquant l'approche de Barth chez les Sámi du nord de la Finlande et les Inuit de l'Arctique canadien. Il discute de la nature dynamique de l'identité et des frontières ethniques chez des nations autochtones en situation minoritaire et place une emphase particulière sur leur interaction avec l'environnement et l'importance du territoire occupé.

Abstract:

In 1969, Fredrik Barth edited and published the seminal compendium Ethnic Groups and Boundaries which influenced, next to his other renowned writings, a generation of anthropologists and their thinking about ethnic groups and their cultures in contact. This paper traces the evolution of Barth's concepts that have been applied to a number of situations and cases well into the 1990s. Further, the author explores the influences he has received himself by applying the Barthian approach to circumstances among the Sámi of northern Finland and the Inuit in arctic Canada. The dynamic nature of ethnic identity and its boundaries among aboriginal nations in minority situations is discussed and particular emphasis is put on the human environmental interaction and the importance of commitment to place.
