The antipassive in Inuktitut

The antipassive in Inuktitut
Pages: 129 - 142

Abstract:

The antipassive is one of two active, two-argument constructions that one finds in many ergative languages. A purely relational explanation of this form of language construction is unacceptable as it does not permit to take into account all of the data. A more satisfactory explanation must include semantic structure and the extra-sentencial context. In Inuktitut, the use of the antipassive represents a choice, as it is employed only when the speaker assumes that the "patient" is not yet known.
