Le document reproduit ci-contre et en couverture constitue la première représentation réaliste d'Inuit par des Européens. Il s'agit d'une femme et de son enfant capturés au Labrador en 1566 et amenés en Europe où ils furent montrés en public. L'article présente une traduction du texte allemand de l'affiche qui raconte les circonstances de cette capture. L'auteur fait également le point sur les différentes versions de cette illustration.

 

Abstract:

The document reproduced here and on the cover constitutes the first realistic depiction of Inuit by Europeans. The woman and her child were kidnapped on the Labrador coast in 1566 and brought to Europe where they were exhibited. The article presents a translation of the German text on the handbill in which are told the circumstances of the kidnapping. The author also surveys the various versions of this illustration.
