Les archives et les références publiées sur les contacts entre Basques, Indiens et Inuit dans la région du détroit de Belle-Isle sont pauvres et lacunaires. Dans la première moitié du 16e siècle, les relations avec les groupes indiens semblent y avoir été amicales. Il y eut alors du troc et quelques autochtones furent engagés pour participer aux activités baleinières. Un document ultérieur décrit explicitement les Inuit comme étant hostiles. Dans quelle mesure l'hostilité des Inuit a-t-elle joué dans la décision des Basques espagnols d'abandonner l'industrie baleinière au début du 17e siècle? Cette question demeure obscure.

 

Abstract:

Archival and published references to Basque contacts with Indians and Inuit in the Strait of Belle Isle region are scanty and discontinuous. During the first half of the 16th century relations with Indian groups encountered there appear to have been friendly. Trading was engaged in and later on some natives appear to have helped with whaling activities. A 1625 account specifically describes the Inuit as being hostile. To what extent this factor played a role in the abandonment of the Spanish Basque whaling industry during the early part of the 17th century remains unclear.
