Ce texte traite du rituel du nalujuk, ou esprit païen, chez les Inuit du nord du Labrador. On examine la signification de cette fête des masques, qui se déroule à la fin de la période de Noël, dans la perspective du processus historique d'acculturation et de transformation de l'identité ethnique, lié à une influence missionnaire intense.

 

Abstract:

This paper is concerned with the ritual of the nalujuk, or heathen spirit, among Inuit in northern Labrador. The significance of the spirit's masked performance, held at the close of the Christmas season, is considered in the light of the historical processes of acculturation and identity transformation in a context of intense missionization.
