Labrador Inuit summer ceremonies

Abstract:

This paper examines several previous unpublished descriptions of Labrador Inuit summer ceremonies. The observations of early Moravian missionaries indicate that, during the early mission period, traditional ceremonial activities were a regular feature of Inuit summer life. This refutes Marcel Mauss’s well known theory that Inuit societies lacked any public ceremonies during this season of the year.
