Abstract:

This paper surveys modes of adaptation to the oceanic environment in the North-Pacific. Six types of adaptation are distinguished and situated in time and space; the main characteristics of these cultural-economic systems are described, with respect to resources and specialization of technology. In conclusion it is asserted that the maritime system of economy represents a significant step forward, as it permits a more efficient exploitation of resources and is more conducive to demographic steadiness.
