La comparaison des trois régions du Groenland où se retrouve le dialecte-i, notamment Upernavik, le Groenland de l'Est et le sud-ouest groenlandais, amène à la conclusion que l'origine de ce phénomène par lequel le /u/ se transforme, dans certains contextes, en /i/, fut une forme de labialisation tardive émergeant du Groenland oriental dans une période d'assimilation progressive des consonnes agglomérées. Il semble que le dialecte d'Upernavik pour lequel nous disposons de nouvelles données, reflète le mieux la forme originaire du phénomène.
Abstract:
A comparison of the three 'i-dialect' areas of Greenland, namely Upernavik, East Greenland and southwestern Greenland, leads to the conclusion that the origin of this phenomenon, whereby original /u/ becomes /i/ in certain contexts, was a form of delayed labialization arising in the East of Greenland at the time of increasing consonant cluster assimilation in Greenlandic. The original form of the phenomenon is seen to be best reflected today in the Upernavik dialect, for which new data has become available.
